So you want to GM a game on the planar surface of a hypercube!
A downloadable mapping system
You're a GM. Your players are about to encounter a horror beyond human comprehension. They are entering into a different world. You have a fantastic idea for how to give players the sense of otherworldliness: you're sending them onto a tesseract, a cube projected into four spatial dimensions.
You have it all planned out. You describe the scene. You get your characters up to speed.
They immediately run off in all the wrong directions and you now have no idea at all what to do.
Running a game on a hypercube is a bad idea! It's gimmicky, it's silly, it doesn't add much to the game but it does make your life harder. However, you're the kind of GM who thinks that this is a great idea, so fortunately for you, I have figured out how to make it work!
My system will help you lay a map on the planar surfaces of a hypercube. That means that your characters are like bugs crawling around on a cube - except the cube has 24 sides instead of 6, and doesn't follow normal spatial rules.
To use the system, you will need eight labeled and color-coded cubes, a map (shown below), a set of compasses, and some sort of small tokens. All of the unique elements are included as printouts.
This book includes:
- A short breakdown on how to think about space when your map is on the surface of an object such as a cube.
- Detailed instructions for understanding compass directions in a hypercube, so that you can keep track of where you are now and where you are going.
- Printouts that you can use to keep track of where your players are now and where they can go next.
- Detailed instructions for navigating and describing your system to the players, including both a simplified and complete system.
- Suggestions for flavor and world descriptions.
- A game that you can use with one player to practice the system. This game serves as a fun little puzzle by itself; it's extremely simple, but some people inexplicably love it.
This book fairly short and limited in scope, but it is totally unique in what it provides. (If you have seen a similar system somewhere else, please please tell me. I am alone in my bizarre obsession!)
I have plans for future installments that cover subjects like gravity, added dimensions, and crafting mazes. I hope to compile all of them into a full printed guide, but for now, this solves the big problem - which is navigation!
